Former TIME Magazine Jerusalem bureau chief David Aikman takes on the headline-grabbing subject of the Middle East in his latest book, The Mirage of Peace. In this comprehensive look at the region, Aikman goes beyond the headlines and sound-bites to examine the complex and deeply rooted sources of the bloodshed and discord that seem to characterize the Middle East. With a journalist's objectivity and an historian's analysis, Aikman, who is now a college history professor, explains the historical context of the animosities dominating today's news, giving readers an understanding of the personalities, relationships and web of complicated loyalties behind the thorny issues that have defied all attempts to bring a lasting peace to the region.
The last few years have seen a great assault upon faith in the publishing world, with an influx of books denouncing religious belief. While attacks on faith are not new, what is notable about these books – several of which have hit the bestseller charts – is their contention that belief in God is not only deluded, but dangerous to society. In The Delusion of Disbelief, former TIME Magazine senior correspondent and bestselling author David Aikman offers an articulate, reasoned response to four writers at the forefront of today's anti-faith movement: Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens. Aikman shines a light on the arguments of these "evangelists of atheism," skillfully exposing their errors and inconsistencies. He explains what appears to motivate atheists and their followers; encourages Christians to look closely at what they believe; arms readers with powerful arguments in response to critics of faith; and exposes the social problems that atheism has caused throughout the world. This slim volume is packed with powerful answers to the claims of the New Atheists. Rather than defend Christianity, Aikman takes the offensive and points out the fallacies and historical distortions in the atheists' attacks on all religious belief.
The only analytical biography of the life of the great American evangelist to date, Billy Graham: His Life and Influence examines Graham's incredible impact not only on the development of Christianity in the United States and worldwide over the past half-century but also on international affairs and in bringing about the fall of Communism. Acclaimed author and former TIME Magazine senior correspondent David Aikman brings his Christian faith and his understanding of world affairs and world history into this thoughtful analysis of Graham's ministry, which flourished during a challenging period in the American experience, when the nation was coming to terms with its unexpected new strength in the world and grappling with the most serious racial and social upheavals since the Civil War. Aikman examines critical episodes of Graham's life that help explain his profound impact, both on the public life of America and other nations and the private lives of their cultural and political leaders.
Richard Ireton is a Hong Kong-based foreign correspondent for an American weekly news magazine. When he is sent to Guangdong, the Chinese province adjacent to Hong Kong, to investigate the disappearance of Chuck McHale, a missing American, he discovers there are dangerous new political currents flowing through South China. In the middle of these developments are practitioners of Qigong, a Taoist meditation and martial arts movement, who are rallying around their Great Master Wu. These fiercely anti-foreign Qigong adherents have allied with renegade forces of the Chinese army, and Ireton learns that together they pose a dangerous new threat to peace in Asia and relations with the United States. Ireton's hunt for McHale, who has run afoul of these Qigong army elements, brings him into the heart of China's underground "house church" movement, where McHale has sought refuge. David Aikman, former TIME Magazine bureau chief in Beijing, provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date book-length report on the remarkable spread of Christianity across China. Beginning with China's first contact with Christianity in 635 A.D., Aikman recounts the gripping story of how Chinese across the country and from all walks of life are today turning to a life of faith, and predicts that this phenomenon could transform this Asian giant. As China becomes increasingly important in world affairs, the role that the church in China is playing has become more and more apparent. When this book first appeared in 2003, some China experts dismissed Aikman's thesis, but by the time this updated paperback edition was published in 2006, developments in China had already proven the author right. Anyone who wants a more complete understanding of China today would benefit from this fascinating book, which traces the unique development of the church in China from ancient history to the 21st century. Packed with fascinating details and inspirational stories of persecuted Chinese church leaders, the book is considered a must-read for anyone interested in Christianity in China. "The Story Behind Jesus in Beijing" — A transcript of David Aikman's talk to an audience in Beijing about how this book was written and what happened after its publication.
From his unique vantage point as a foreign correspondent for TIME Magazine, David Aikman witnessed many of the most important world events of the last three decades of the 20th century and interviewed many of the most prominent world figures of the time. In Great Souls, Aikman chose six people who dramatically changed the world in the 20th century in unparallelled ways and highlights the faith component of their lives that motivated and sustained them in their life's work. Through thoughful profiles, Aikman shows how these rare examples of moral and spiritual excellence each embodied a specific virtue: Billy Graham—salvation, Nelson Mandela—forgiveness, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn—truth, Mother Teresa—compassion, Pope John Paul II—human dignity, and Elie Wiesel—remembrance. Out of Print Works by David Aikman Hope: The Heart's Great Quest
Hope falls squarely into the field of Christian apologetics by examining the role of hope in Christianity, and compares it with hope's absence in other faiths like Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Marxism, and New Age. Some readers regard Hope as David Aikman's best book because it compares so many different belief-systems with the Christian faith. When the Almond Tree Blossoms
Set in 1998, this first novel by a senior correspondent for TIME Magazine involves a reactionary but sometimes entertaining post-Cold War scenario. A second U.S. civil war pits the "Constitutionalists" against the "People's Movement" (PM), a left-wing coalition that seized power after Russia defeated the U.S. in Iran. National politics are topsy-turvy: Russia is a fascist state; the PM-run U.S. is communist, almost Maoist; while China has rejected Mao in favor of a market economy. The PC PM-ers are clearly the bad guys here and freedom under their rule is as precarious as it was under Stalin, though the PM has yet to master Stalin's efficiency in eliminating opposition. To that end, they have enlisted the assistance of a Russian, Alexei Ilyich Ponomarev. Ponomarev in turn recruits supposed PM stalwart Douglas Richfield to infiltrate the Constitutionalists to discover both the identity of a Constitutionalist mole and to secure information about Project Almond, the opposition's nuclear trump card. It quickly becomes obvious which side Richfield will eventually support — especially since his love interest is active in the Constitutionalist underground. Aikman addresses world politics, secret agendas and ultimately biblical prophecy in this thriller. Pacific Rim: Area of Change, Area of Opportunity
In the late 1980's China and the "four tigers" (Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea) were at the start of one of the most remarkable periods of economic expansion in human history. Pacific Rim is an examination of that phenomenon written at the time it took place. Also Co-Author of Massacre in Beijing: China's Struggle for Democracy
On the night of June 3-4 1989 there occurred one of the most dramatic and tragic events in recent world history, the armed crack-down on Chinese students protesting for democracy in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Massacre in Beijing is a blow-by-blow account of the events (Aikman was an eyewitness) and an account of the historical developments and events that led up to it. Gorbachev: An Intimate Biography
When Gorbachev first visited the US in 1987, not very much was known about him. This biographical study is based on numerous interviews by TIME correspondents (including Aikman) over several weeks in Europe and the US with people who had known the Soviet leader in earlier years or knew his character. Love China Today
In 1975, while China was still suffering through the Cultural Revolution, Western and Chinese missionaries met in Manila in the first major international conference since 1949 on the evangelization of China. In the book, the author introduces some of the speeches at the conference and offers his own insights into the "religious" nature of Marxism and Maoism. |
